Welcome to the Darwin Arts Trilobite, an intuitive software toolkit for creating new sound timbres and controllable audio synthesis patches.
This file contains important information about the programs and resources distributed as Trilobite, and includes links to the software license and documentation. Please read this documentation carefully before using the software and resources.
Version 0.9.3 is a radical overhaul of earlier versions of the Cambrian Suite software applications. The most obvious visible change which previous users will notice is that Trilobite now contains the ability to visually edit patches, rather than requiring a separate Marella application to do so. Other notable changes include:
An OSX version is now available
Working AU (32/64) and VST (32) plugin versions
Completely overhauled internal audio synthesis engine
Patch bank librarian
Drag and drop loading features
Web bank sharing features
Preset manager
New manual, with application-integrated contextual help buttons
Fully customizable color schemes
See the installer release notes for more information.
The manifest of the Trilobite installation includes:
This readme file.
TrilobiteReleaseNotes.txt, which gives a listing of changes from previous releases.
DarwinArtsTrilobite_License.html, a copy of the license agreement included with the installer.
User Guide, in the form of html browser documentation.
Trilobite.exe (for Win32) or Trilobite.app (for 64-bt OSX), the executable application.
VST (for Win32) or AU (for OSX) version(s) of Trilobite, for usage as a plugin within plugin host applications (see below for further installation instructions).
Demonstration_Instruments.da_trbank, a bank of patches intended for basic demonstration of Trilobite synthesis capabilities and patch design.
Keyboard_Instruments_01.da_trbank, a bank of patches manually designed and evolved for usage with Midi keyboard instruments.
Evolved_Instruments_01.da_trbank, a bank of evolved patches, demonstrating the really unique features of Trilobite.
Like the audio synthesis patches it creates, Trilobite will continue to evolve and adapt to its environment...in this case that environment being the needs, interests, and inspirations of its creators and user community. System Requirements
Microsoft Windows 7 or later (note that problems with the VST plugin have been observed with plugin hosts running under Apple Bootcamp).
OSX version 10.8 or later
Intel compatible PC (Dual or Multi-core systems recommended)
1GB RAM or higher
1.5GB available hard disk
1024x768 or higher screen resolution
Please be aware that administrator rights may be required for installation. It is recommended that you close all other applications before starting the installation.
Making the Trilobite plugin versions visible to your VST or Audio Units host software may be application specific, and you should read your VST host documentation to determine this, but in general you can take the following further manual steps to begin using the included plugin(s) right away:
For Audio Units plugins on OSX, copy or move the folders Trilobite_au32.component and Trilobite_au64.component from the installation directory (Trilobite_0.9.3 in your Applications Folder) into the shared plugins folder /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components. See the Apple support page for more details and other options.
For VST plugins on Microsoft Windows systems, there are just about as many different options for installing plugins as there are VST hosts which can load them. In most cases, you will need to copy the dynamic link library file Trilobite_vst32.dll from Trilobite installation directory to a VST plugins folder specific to the host software manufacturer. Please consult the host user documentation to determine the best option.
At this time Trilobite supports no known 3rd party audio synthesis media formats, and there is no implied guarantee that such support will be provided in the future. Any 3rd party compatibility found to exist is purely coincidental and not supported by Darwin Arts in any way.
Please note that Trilobite 0.9.3 does not support media from earlier versions.
Darwin Arts will endeavor to maintain media compatibility in future releases of Trilobite and any derivative product, but reserves the right to make improvements which may disable such backwards compatibility. Any future loss of compatibility known to Darwin Arts will be documented in future release notes.
Other than the User Guide included with this release, Darwin Arts provides no official support for Trilobite. If you have questions not covered in the user guide, please feel free to post on the appropriate forum at our web site, and the user community (or our harried engineer) will provide assistance if possible.
Please be aware that Trilobite is released in its current “beta” stage of development for the benefit of adventurous users ready to create new sound timbres using techniques based on Darwinian Evolution, as opposed to the “Intelligent Design” approach of most soft-synths. If you find that using a product which is potentially still buggy, rough around the edges, and likely to generate unpredictable results seems risky rather than appealing to you, please feel free to delete this installation and watch our web site for more stable future releases.
Darwin Arts makes no claims regarding the suitability of Trilobite to meet your particular needs, but then we've probably never dreamed of what you're trying to do. For more details regarding your rights and limitations in using this software, please consult the license agreement consented to when this software was installed.
